Oregon Campus Compact (ORCC)

Oregon Campus Compact VISTA members serve on college campuses to develop service-learning programs, build relationships and partnerships between their institution and the surrounding community, implement campus-wide service days, coordinate programs that engage students in community service, and increase the level of civic engagement on their campuses. Established in 2007 through a partnership with the Corporation for National and Community Service, the ORCC VISTA program enables colleges and universities to address issues facing low-income communities through high quality service-learning and community service programs that empower students to be change agents in their communities.
What do ORCC VISTAS do?
ORCC VISTAS help strengthen and sustain service and service-learning programs through a variety of projects, initiatives, and activities including:
- Establish and strengthen campus partnerships with community-based organizations that address the needs of low-income populations.
- Work with faculty and staff to create and coordinate service-learning courses.
- Plan and implement campus service projects and national service days.
- Conduct presentations and meetings with faculty, students, and community members to increase awareness of service-learning and community engagement.
- Recruit, train, and place student volunteers to serve in the community.
- Establish and coordinate co-curricular service programming including Alternative Breaks, literacy and mentoring programs, and student leadership programs.
How do campuses benefit?
ORCC VISTA members provide invaluable service to their schools by serving full-time to build and strengthen high-quality service programs, connect campuses and communities, increase student civic engagement and leadership, and build the capacity of campuses to meet community needs, all at a very low cost to the campus. The work that ORCC VISTAS do lasts far beyond their year of service to create institutional change on their campuses.
